Our jaunt over to the little marine town of Sausalito, affectionately termed as the French Riviera of the States, was loads of fun even if we blew a huge hole in our pockets. Not the least of which was the bill for our one night’s stay at the ultra-quaint and cosy Inn Above Tide.
But, oh, the view was simply to die for and I did not regret it one bit. I could spend an entire afternoon sitting on the chaise lounges on our private deck reading, sipping a luscious mocktail, gazing out on the water and seagulls, feeling and hearing the waves lap gently against the building.
Came evening, we left to keep our date with Sushi Ran, one of San Francisco Bay Area’s top restaurants if Michelin stars are a good yardstick to go by. Sushi Ran garnered one star in the Michelin Guide’s first ever ratings for the Bay Area and Wine Country in 2007, and has apparently kept it for 2008.
Now, I was a Michelin virgin till I stepped foot on San Francisco soil and proceeded to bankrupt myself and the fiance with our relentless foodie trail of destruction around the city, but I’m really not so sure that Sushi Ran deserves a star. Yes, our omakase sashimi platter was fresh, my miso soup with clams was full of depth and briny sweetness, the sushi rolls were competently executed and more than tasty enough. But I could say that, and much more, of more than a few Japanese restaurants we have here in Singapore too. Oh well. That’s not to say that the food at Sushi Ran was not good though, just that I went there expecting to be blown away since, you know, it’s Michelin!
But needless to say, Sausalito is much more than Sushi Ran, and I really dug its laidback, relaxed yet elegant charms. At one point, the fiance and I even secretly wondered if this was, in fact, a playground for well-to-do retirees as we saw more genteel geriatric couples than people our own age, both in our hotel and around town.
Not that we minded, because we had so much fun exploring the town from end to end, exclaiming at the incredible views from the top of the hills and stopping every so often to inhale the sharp, spicy and cold air. I loved every minute of it spent with you
